Moon phase
Moon phase is the angle between the Moon and the Sun on your birth date, which fixes how much of the lunar disc was illuminated. It needs nothing but a date, takes one of eight values, and repeats roughly every 29.5 days. Because it is a single angle, it can be computed exactly and checked against any ephemeris, the reason this site can be confident about the astronomy even while being clear that the personality layer is interpretation.
Moon sign
Moon sign is the Moon's position along the zodiac, one of twelve signs. The Moon crosses a sign in roughly two and a half days, so for a good share of birthdays a date alone leaves it genuinely ambiguous and a birth time is needed to settle it. Moon sign is read for emotional style and inner life. Moon phase is read for position in a cycle. Two people can share a phase and have different signs, or share a sign and have different phases, they are independent measurements.
Birth chart
A birth or natal chart maps every planet plus the ascendant at the moment of birth, which requires date, exact time and place. Synastry, comparing two people astrologically, properly means comparing two whole charts, looking at aspects between all the placements. Moon phase compatibility uses one number out of that entire diagram, which is why it can be worked out from two dates and why it claims far less.
How to tell which one you were given
- If the answer is a picture of the Moon or a percentage, it is a phase.
- If the answer is a zodiac sign such as "Moon in Scorpio", it is a sign.
- If you were asked for your time and city of birth, it is a chart.
- If a site asked only for your date and then told you a zodiac sign, treat it with caution: it either used noon as an assumption or reported your Sun sign instead.
Why they get confused
All three involve the Moon, all three are described as revealing emotional character, and the phrase "moon reading" is used for any of them. The viral moon phase soulmate format made it worse by producing something that looks like an astrological result from a date alone, which people then reasonably assumed was the same thing an astrologer means by a moon reading.
Which to use
Use moon phase when you have two birth dates and nothing else, the common case, and what the calculator on this site is for. Use moon sign when birth times are available and emotional style is the question. Use a full chart when the question is too broad for one measurement. None of the three has scientific support, a point set out plainly on the how these figures are produced, and the eight phase descriptions show what this site does with the measurement it uses.
